    Monty Pythonモンティ・パイソン

    ６人組の異能コメディ集団、モンティ・パイソン。モンティとは"オカマ"を意味し、パイソンはスラングで"ペニス"を意味するというから、一筋縄ではいかない。69年より始まったBBC番組『空飛ぶモンティ・パイソン』では、政治や犯罪などのトピカルなネタからスキャンダルや変態趣味……と、それまでのTV界ではタブー視されてきたあらゆるものを積極的に取り上げ風刺化、ギャグ化。開始直後こそ識者の眉をひそめさせたが、タブーを破ろうとするアティテュードは、カウンター・カルチャーの追い風に乗って70年代に入ると若者を中心に絶大な支持を得るようになった。
    彼らの特徴は、"お笑い"の基本である"オチ"を極力排除してしまったところにある。起承転結の"結"をなくすことにより、見る側に自由な発想ができるようにしたところがミソ。また、過激なギャグの裏に潜む反体制・反権力のメッセージも人気の秘密だろう。
    またコメディ界だけでなく、音楽を含むポップ・カルチャー全体に多大なる影響を及ぼした。特にビートルズ人脈との交流は有名だろう。
