    ベイカーズ・フィールドの旗手、バック・オウエンズの正統な継承者であるマール・ハガード。極貧のなかで育ち、何度も刑務所を往復するといった青春時代を過ごした。
    悲しみと寂寥感が同居した非常にセンシティヴな詞を歌い、カントリー・シンガーというよりも、歌を通して１人の男が辿った道が窺えるような、シンガー・ソングライター寄りの佇まいが魅力的だ。そしてカントリーにロックのバック・ビートを持ち込んだベイカーズ・フィールド・サウンドに、さらにホンキィ・トンク色を濃く打ち出したのが、ハガードの特徴だ。
    また、このサウンドはロック・フィールドにも広く受け入れられ、グラム・パーソンズ、グレイトフル・デッド、エルヴィス・コステロらがハガードのナンバーをカバーしている。実際グラムは自身のアルバムのプロデュースをハガードに依頼するほど憧れていた（実現しなかったが）。ちなみに、シンプル極まりない演奏で歌をバック・アップする彼のバンド、ストレンジャーズも激シブな味を出している。
