    ベニー・グッドマンと共に“スウィングの王様”と称されたグレン・ミラーは、日本で最もポピュラーな白人ビッグ・バンド・リーダーだろう。紳士的かつノーブルな顔立ちの持ち主で、トロンボーンを優雅に吹きこなし、30年代初頭〜40年代前半のジャズ・シーンを席捲した。優れた作編曲家でもあり、代表曲の「イン・ザ・ムード」や「ムーン・ライト・セレナーデ」などは何処かで耳にしているはず。聴けば、「あぁ、コレねー」と頷くこと間違いナシだ。黒人のジャズから“歴史の重み”といった部分を排除し、底抜けに明るいポップな曲調を信条に、白人らしい洗練されたスウィングを聴かせてくれる。
    太平洋戦争の勃発で一時バンド活動を休止するが、42年アイゼンハワーに認められ、グレン・ミラー・アーミー・エアー・フォース・バンドとして再開。従軍慰安のために世界中を廻って演奏し、1年弱で800以上のステージを重ねる。——しかし44年、パリへ向かう飛行機に乗ったまま、還らぬ人となってしまった。彼の意思を引継いでバンドは存続しつづけ、現在でもワールドワイドな活躍をしている（日本にも年に一度のペースで訪れているのだ）。
