    B.J. Thomasビー・ジェイ・トーマス

    B.J.トーマスといえば、映画『明日に向かって撃て』の挿入歌であるバカラック・ナンバー「Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head（雨にぬれても）」が余りにも有名だが、40年に及ぶキャリアの中で、ポップ〜カントリー〜ゴスペルと多岐に渡るジャンルでヒットを放っている人物だ。中でもその最盛期は60〜70年代の＜セプター＞時代。自ら作曲することはほとんどないのだが、エルヴィス・プレスリーで有名なマーク・ジェイムスやアメリカン・ポップス請負人のマン＆ウェイルなどの楽曲を積極的に取り上げ、最高のホワイトR&Bを生み出した。甘さの中に南部フィーリングを滲ませた唱法もB.J.ならではのものだろう。
    ちなみに、山下達郎が率いたシュガーベイブ唯一のアルバム『ソングス』のタイトルは、B.J.の同名アルバムから取られた。
