    土星からやって来たと公言する、僧侶のようなローブに身を包んだピアニスト／コンポーザー／バンド・リーダーであるサン・ラ。ジャズ伝導師として、半世紀に渡って不可解で崇高な美を創造した。40年代のシカゴでキャリアをスタートさせ、生涯を通じてともに活動するミュージシャン団体ジ・オルケストラを間もなくして結成する。以後、スウィングとバップにアヴァンギャルドな要素を加えた、常識を覆すような実験的作品を演奏していく。50年代後半の整然としてデリケートな作品群は、60年代になると突然無秩序となり、がなりたてるようなオルガンとシンセサイザー、西アフリカのリズム、室内楽の方法論、フリーキーなソロ・プレイ、ビッグ・バンドのダイナミック性、スウィングするメロディ、そしてこの世のものとは思えないジューン・タイソンの歌声など、本質的に異なる音楽要素を全て取り込むことで、それは急速的にエスカレートしていった。ときには、バンドのメンバー達がマイクを取り、アフリカ回帰や宇宙についての説教を行うこともある。それらは当時の政治運動に少なからず影響を及ぼしていた。サン・ラは93年にこの惑星を去ったが、彼の音楽は未だこの地で人々に訴えかけている。
