    Regina Belleレジーナ・ベル

    レジーナ・ベルといえば、“クワイエット・ストームの歌姫”としてアニタ・ベイカーと並び称される存在だ。ジャズの影響を濃厚に感じさせるしっとりとしたその歌い口調は、80年代のアーバン・ナイトライフを彩り、都会生活者にはすこぶる人気があったと記憶している。
    そんなレジーナが最初に知られるようになったのは、マンハッタンズの「ホエア・ディド・ウィ・ゴー・ロング」においてデュエット・パートナーに選ばれたことによって、である。その歴史的な名演をきっかけに、87年『オール・バイ・マイセルフ』でデビュー。R＆Bとフュージョンのクロスオーヴァー・サウンドを基調としているが、ポップとしても一級品のこの作品は、レジーナを一気にトップ・シンガーの地位へと押し上げた。
    そして92年にはディズニー映画『アラジン』の主題歌「ア・ホール・ニュー・ワールド」をピーボ・ブライソンとデュエットで。結果的に同曲はUS No.１を獲得し、ポップ・フィールドにまでその存在をアピールした。以降、95年には全曲フィリー・ソウルのカヴァーで占められたルーツ明かし的アルバム『リーチン・バック』をリリース。そして01年には、３年ぶりのオリジナル・アルバム『ズィス・イズ・レジーナ』を発表した。伸びやかでエモーショナル、それでいて押しつけるようなところのない彼女の歌唱スタイルは、歌い上げ系シンガーの多いR＆Bシーンのなかにおいて、独特の存在感を放つものである。
