    ジョナサン・リッチマンの音楽活動は順調とは言いがたい形でスタートを切った。最初のバンド、ザ・モダン・ラヴァーズはレーベル間のトラブルが原因で、71年に録音されたアルバムは６年間オクラ入りとなる。だが長い年月を経てようやく発表された曲は、どれもみずみずしく生命力に満ちあふれ、今もその新鮮さは色あせることがない。ザ・モダン・ラヴァーズはシャイで内向的な人間のオタクっぽい側面をインディー・ロックに確立させたのだ。自主的なインターバルの後、アルバム制作とライヴ活動に復帰したジョナサン・リッチマンはもう、過去に味わった辛い経験の片鱗も見せなかった。スケコマシを滑稽に描いた「マイ・キャリア・アズ・ア・ホームレッカー」から「ヴァンパイア・ガール」の俗っぽいジョークまで、くどすぎないユーモアとインテリっぽい皮肉が、ファンを楽しませる。
