    46年、イリノイ州メイウッドに生まれる。祖父はカントリー界のスーパー・スター、マール・ハガードと演奏していたミュージシャンで、プライン自身も14歳でギターを手にし、70年代初頭よりシカゴ界隈のクラブで歌い始めた。そして、71年にアトランティック・レコードと契約し、１stアルバム『John　Prine』を発表。ベトナム帰還兵をテーマにした「サム・ストーン」やドラッグについて歌った「イリーガル・スマイル」などが収録されたこのアルバムに、クリス・クリストファーソンは「彼は24歳。だがまるで220歳のような歌を書く」という言葉を寄せている。プラインの名は次第にシーンに浸透していき、彼の曲をカヴァーするアーティストも増えてきた。しかし、アトランティックでのラスト・アルバム『コモン・センス』はスマッシュ・ヒットしたものの、その後、出すアルバム出すアルバムが、鳴かず飛ばずで終わってしまうという不遇の時代が続いた。だが、アルバム『The Missing Years』のグラミー賞受賞によって、再度幸運の女神が微笑むことに——。90年代に入ると、彼の曲はジョン・デンバーやボニー・レイットからカヴァーされ、また本人も「I Just Want to Dance With You」（ロジャー・クックとの共作）といった大ヒットを記録しながら、現在も活躍中である。
    恐ろしいほど達観した視点で歌をつくり、悩める国アメリカの現実を浮かびあがらせるという点では、ランディ・ニューマンに匹敵する人物といえるだろう。
