    「アイルランドのユーミン」ことエンヤ・ニ・ブレナンことエンヤ。彼女は80年に、姉が在籍するアイリッシュ・トラッド・フォーク・グループ「クラナド」の参加を経て、82年ソロ活動をスタート。映画監督・デヴィッド・パットナム作品のサウンドトラックを手掛け注目を集めた後、87年『ケルツ』でソロ・デビューを果した。
    エンヤのサウンドはまるで、アイルランドの荒涼とした大自然を壮大なスケールで描いたかのようである。哀愁帯びたメロディを奏でるシンセサイザー、張り詰めた緊張感をもつヴォーカル——そして、それらを多重録音しケルト・ミュージックのエッセンスを注入。加えてゲール語といった土着的な言語と英語の併用によって、トラディショナルな香りも強く漂わせる音の世界。それはある種、宗教的でもありスピリチュアルな空気さえ感じとれるものだ。静寂とした音の中で「人々の心に希望の光りを灯す」——まさしくそんなアーティストではないだろうか。
